The role of the windshield is a lot more complex than simply allowing a view of the road ahead. It is considered a structural part of the vehicle as it contributes to the strength of the roof and A-pillars. The windshield helps to manage collision energy and has become an integral part of several advanced safety systems.
It is commonly asked, "What is required when replacing a windshield?" With this question in mind, we are presenting a series of articles that highlight some of the requirements from the various OEMs. As always, it is important to read through each vehicle-specific procedure to ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
Let’s see what BMW/Mini has to say for the 2016-2024 model years.
- BMW specifies the use of their own adhesive, and cleaning solutions.
- BMW/Mini specifies the use of Sika cleaning solution, activator, and primer for bonded glass.
- Be sure to refer to the urethane manufacturer’s directions for curing time specifications, and do not use adhesive after its expiration date.
- BMW/Mini specifies using either Roll Out 2000 which is a wire cutting system, or Spider, which is a nylon string cutting system. The vehicle-specific procedure states which system is to be used.
As special cautions, vehicles equipped with:
- Camera-based driver support system needs to have the system calibrated.
- Compass may need to be calibrated if the compass is not functioning after the rearview mirror is installed.
- Rain sensor needs calibration depending upon which type of sensor. Refer to Overview, Rain Sensor (additional work when replacing the windscreen/sensor replacement) document.
- Head-up display, requires a special OEM replacement windshield.
