What is a one-time-use part, and how do you determine if a fastener, clip, or part can be reused? These are questions that we are confronted with in the collision industry quite a lot. The other big question is "Where do I find this information?"
As the Repairability Technical Support (RTS) team researches OEMs for one-time-use fastener/part information, we are putting together a series of articles on how and where to locate this information for specific OEMs. Let’s take a look at Rivian.
Rivian has two position statements related to one-time-use fasteners.
Per the Approved Fasteners document Rivian states: "Important: All Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) fasteners must be replaced if they are loosened or removed from the vehicle."
The other Rivian position statement, Threaded Fastener Re-Use (Threadlocker) provides information on when a fastener may be re-used or requires replacement.
In both position statements Rivian supplies a list of fastener types which must be replaced with new. Per the Approved Fasteners position statement:
"Fastener(s) must be replaced with a new, Rivian approved fastener when:
- It is worn or deformed
- It is self-locking or torque-to-yield
- It has a factory applied thread coating and is removed from the vehicle"
Following OEM procedures, including the identification and use of one-time-use fasteners/parts, is important in order to help ensure a complete, safe, and quality repair.
